What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins. Any superficial vein may become varicosed, but the veins most commonly affected are those in your legs. That's because standing and walking upright increases the pressure in the veins of your lower body. For many people, varicose veins and spider veins , a common, mild variation of varicose veins , are simply a cosmetic concern. For other people, varicose veins can cause aching pain and discomfort. Sometimes varicose veins lead to more-serious problems. Spider veins are similar to varicose veins, but they're smaller. Spider veins are found closer to the skin's surface and are often red or blue. Spider veins occur on the legs, but can also be found on the face. They vary in size and often look like a spider's web.

What causes vein problems?

A variety of life events can cause problems in veins, such as pregnancy, a job where you’re on your feet a lot and/or wearing heavy gear. Also, vein issues can result from genetic factors. Even without these risk factors, you can develop problems with blood flow in your lower extremities. Almost 1 in 3 people over the age of 45 have some kind of venous disease.

What Are Your Treatment Options?

We always strive to give you the best results possible with the least invasive procedures available. Based on what you and your physician discuss, you WILL mutually decide on a plan of action!

Clinician performing an ultrasound examination of a leg

How is the Procedure Performed?

On your treatment day, an ultrasound technician will map out the location of the affected vein/s needing treatment. Then, your leg will be thoroughly cleaned to prevent any possible infection. You will be given local anesthesia to numb the affected area (Similarly to what dentists use). Using technological advances, we will close the affected vein/s from the inside. NO incisions or cuts are required or made by the physician. A small band-aid is used to cover the procedure site afterwards and a compression stocking is applied over the treated leg to prevent bruising, tenderness and to ensure proper blood flow throughout your leg. The total length of the procedure from start to finish is 30 minutes.

Post Procedure Recovery

  • You CAN return to work the day after your procedure.
  • There are NO activity limitations after, but do NOT engage in any strenuous activity, take a bath or swim for 24 hours.
  • You CAN take a shower!
  • You WILL wear a compression stocking when you leave the office, which you WILL need to sleep in for the first 2 days after treatment, removing it ONLY to shower.
  • It is VERY important to keep moving and maintain a normal level of activity. Walking twice daily for 20 minutes is encouraged and promotes a speedy recovery.
  • Avoid ANY prolonged sitting or standing for the first week.
